ZALEWSKA
Paulina Zalewska is a graduate of the Faculty of Graphics and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. She received her diploma in 2008 from the Studio of Printmaking Techniques, under the supervision of Professor Krzysztof Wawrzyniak, and completed her diploma annex in the Painting Studio of Professor Ryszard Hunger. In 2006, she participated in international printmaking workshops at the Kaus Centre for Artistic Graphics in Urbino, Italy, where she was awarded a one-month artistic scholarship the following year. In 2011, she was nominated for an award at the 24th International Biennial of Small Graphic Forms and Exlibris in Ostrów Wielkopolski. She was also a finalist of the 43rd Bielska Jesień Painting Biennial. Her work has been presented in numerous group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
Paulina Zalewska’s artistic practice revolves around journeys — both physical and inner — as well as the relationship between the individual, space, memory, and emotions. The artist treats painting as a space for reflection on identity, where symbolism and narrative invite viewers to create their own interpretations. The protagonists of her paintings are constantly on a journey. Their presence within surreal landscapes creates narratives about the search for balance, security, and inner harmony. In her compositions, the artist frequently draws upon fairy-tale, archetypal, and symbolic motifs, creating a subtle tension between the real and the imagined.
Paulina Zalewska primarily works in acrylic on canvas. Her painting is distinguished by meticulous attention to detail, clarity of form, and a conscious use of colour, which is one of her most important means of expression. Intense colour combinations and surreal compositions create an atmosphere of mystery, encouraging viewers to engage with the works on a personal level and discover their own meanings.
The artist’s work forms a bridge between reality and imagination. Her paintings create spaces for contemplation, where emotions, symbols, and colour guide the viewer through an individual, inner narrative.
